What is SIF?
SIF stands for Specialised Investment Fund. It is a new category of investment product introduced by SEBI in 2025, and it is run by Mutual Fund Asset Management Companies (AMCs), the same companies that run your regular mutual funds.
Think of it as a product that sits in between a normal mutual fund and a Portfolio Management Service (PMS) or Alternative Investment Fund (AIF). It gives the fund manager more freedom to use advanced strategies like short-selling through derivatives, that a regular mutual fund is not allowed to use, but it still follows the mutual fund rulebook, so it stays more regulated, transparent, and tax-efficient than a PMS or AIF.
In simple words: SIF = Mutual fund rules + PMS/AIF-style flexibility, made for investors who want more than a plain-vanilla mutual fund but are not yet ready for the higher cost and higher minimum ticket size of a PMS or AIF.
Why has SIF been introduced?
Before SIF, Indian investors had two main choices when they wanted more than regular mutual funds:
SEBI noticed this gap and created SIF to bridge it. The idea is to give experienced, affluent investors a regulated middle path, one that allows more sophisticated strategies like long-short equity, tactical allocation, and sector rotation at a lower entry ticket of Rs.10 lacs and with mutual-fund-level transparency, while still protecting investors through strict rules on risk, disclosure, and reporting.
Who manages SIF?
Only a registered Mutual Fund AMC that meets SEBI's eligibility criteria can launch a SIF. There are two ways an AMC can qualify:
Once approved, the AMC runs the SIF under its own dedicated brand, for example, Edelweiss Mutual Fund runs its SIF under the brand 'Altiva', and Quant Mutual Fund runs its SIF under the brand 'QSIF'.
Types of SIF
SEBI has grouped SIF strategies into three broad categories, with specific strategies allowed under each:
A. Equity oriented strategies
B. Debt oriented strategies
C. Hybrid strategies
Terminology used in SIF
A few new terms come up often when reading about SIF. Here is what they mean in plain language:
Strategies used by AMC for SIF
While strategies may differ across AMCs, most SIFs use a combination of the following tools:
The common thread is that AMCs use the extra flexibility SIF regulations give them short-selling, derivatives, wider asset mixes to try and deliver better risk-adjusted returns than a plain long-only mutual fund, or steadier returns than a pure equity fund.
What risks are involved in SIF
SIF is suitable for what kind of investors?
SIFs are not designed for first-time or very conservative investors. They suit:
Conclusion & Our Suggestions
We suggest considering following SIFs based on their different investment approaches and objectives. Both are designed for different types of investors and market conditions. Here is a simple side-by-side comparison:
Past performances of suggested SIFs
Altiva Hybrid Long-Short SIF: If you are looking for a relatively stable and lower-volatility option as your first SIF investment, with an approach similar to a hybrid or arbitrage fund. It can be a good starting point for exploring SIFs.
QSIF Ex-Top 100 Long-Short Fund: If you already have core equity investments, have a high risk appetite, and want an aggressive allocation focused on mid- and small-cap stocks, with the flexibility to benefit from both rising and falling markets.
As both funds are relatively new, we suggest taking a measured approach and giving them a few more quarters to demonstrate their performance across different market conditions. Investors can consider starting with the minimum investment, reviewing the ISID carefully, and regularly monitoring performance, risk levels, and portfolio disclosures. This approach allows investors to gain experience with the SIF structure while gradually building confidence in the strategy.
