Noises are everywhere. Households, automobiles, factories, and financial markets all produce noise. Contrary to popular belief, noises are not bad; rather, they deliver information. For example, a noise from your car may inform you about the bad condition of the vehicle. Similarily, noises from your bathroom tap can inform you about a leak.
Noises are information, but in financial markets they are not. Market noise is an informal term for the volatility that results primarily from news broadcast by well-known business news networks. Positive and negative news always have an impact on markets because humans are emotion-driven. They forget the fact that these financial market news stories are nothing but illogical hype that could lead to irrational investor behavior in the market. Moreover, the markets will, sooner or later, correct those irrational price moves.
Market news is the ‘product’ sold by financial news networks. As everyday noises may distract you, market noises can also influence your investment decision or distract you from your financial goal. The majority of the information or news that is floating in the market is just noise. The issue is that noise spreads much more quickly than relevant information. It is very challenging to separate the genuine information from the noise and signal overload.
How to tune out the market noise
In this age of lightning-fast information exchange, investors must protect themselves from market noise. There are several ways to do that.
Time is an inevitable tool to ward off market noise. By increasing the time frame, you can effectively reduce the impact of market noise on your investments. As exposure to market data or perspectives is reduced, the most pertinent details become more apparent. For instance, you should cut back on how often you check things like the stock market, market news, and your portfolio.
Another good way to filter out market noise is to only pay attention to the most important things that happen on the markets and ignore the rest. For example, recent noteworthy market developments include the market correction followed by the Corona pandemic, policy shifts by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the passing of the Finance Bill for the Debt Fund, Gold Funds, Funds of Funds, and Global Fund.
Market noises are good at times
At times, market noise is good for us. As investors, we get the chance to enter the market by either investing more, rebalancing the portfolio, or simply booking profits.
Your financial advisor plays a crucial role in helping you cut through all the noise. He or she advises you to take appropriate action as per your financial goals and plans while guiding you through crises. An intelligent investor never goes with the flow of the noise; he will always keep his mind open for valid market signals.
Happy Investing!
