Please find below our in-depth analysis of Specialized Investment Funds (SIFs):
Executive Summary:
SIFs are a SEBI-regulated category of open-ended (or interval) investment schemes that allow mutual fund houses to offer sophisticated strategies. They combine the regulatory oversight, transparency, and tax efficiency of MFs with the flexibility of hedging-like tactics, such as limited short-selling.
Section 1: Key Highlights:
Section 2: Regulatory Limits:
Section 3: Comparisons with Other Products:
Section 4: Categories and Strategies:
SEBI has approved seven sub-categories. Current scheme launches are focused on equity and hybrids. Each AMC can launch only one scheme per sub-category.
Section 5: Available Schemes:
As of February 11, 2026, ~12-15 schemes are live. Performance is short-term; hybrids lead. Total AUM ~₹7,500 Cr (SBI leads at ~₹2,700 Cr).
Section 6: Performance Analysis:
Given that most SIF schemes were launched in the second half of 2025, available performance data covers only 1-month and 3-month periods.
Performance Insights for SIFs
Below is the performance of Benchmarks:
Equity Long-Short Funds: Consistently underperformed Nifty 50 in both 1 month and 3 months period, with negative returns despite mild benchmark gains/losses, indicating limited effectiveness in capturing upside or hedging downsides effectively.
Hybrid Long-Short Funds: Delivered neutral to positive results, often at par or outperforming the Hybrid Index in 1M/3M amid flat/negative markets, driven by debt stability and hedging; however, longer period shows variability, with Quant lagging and Edelweiss/SBI leading.
Equity Ex-Top 100 Funds: Underperformed Nifty Midcap 150 across periods, failing to leverage midcap volatility for gains, suggesting conservative strategies or poor stock picks in a mixed market.
Section 7: Upcoming Schemes:
Section 8: Conclusion:
The Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) segment marks an important evolution in India’s investment landscape, offering investors a sophisticated, strategy-driven, and risk-managed solution.
However, the category remains in a formative phase. Limited track records, nascent performance data, and the absence of a standout scheme from a risk-adjusted return perspective call for a calibrated and patient approach.
We expect continued product innovation and strategy refinement over the coming months as additional AMCs enter the space and existing funds build meaningful performance histories.
For investors who remain keen to participate at this stage, a calibrated allocation may be considered, with a preference for SBI Magnum Hybrid Long-Short SIF, subject to suitability and overall portfolio alignment.
